Overlooked.

Here are my nominees for performances, scripts, and films the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences missed:

Performances: Kate Winslet in Romance and Cigarettes; Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd; Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. in Zodiac; Irfan Khan and Tabu in The Namesake; Leslie Mann in Knocked Up; Michael Cera in Superbad; Russell Crowe in something--he was terrific every time I saw him this year; Josh Brolin in No Country for Old Men

Writing: The Lookout; Rocket Science

Picture: Zodiac

Pretty good year, actually, for movies, in my opinion.

Pop Quiz: If you saw Steve Carell in your grocery store in Sugar House, what, if anything, would you say to him?

  1. I forgot all about Zodiac. Zodiac is better than all of the Oscar nominees, even though I was lukewarm to it at the time.

Yes, Zodiac. And what about Robert Downey Jr.'s excellent performance?

  2. Sorry, didn't give your blog the close read it needed; yes you mentioned Downey Jr. I thought you said Gyllenhall.

  3. Did you see Steve Carell in the grocery store? Why have I not heard about this? I would want to be one of those hysterical fans that scream and say something stupid. But instead I would quietly follow him around, looking for a reason to ask him, casually, in front of the frozen foods, "So, what kind of ice cream should I get?"

  4. Well if I saw Steve Carrell I would obviously throw myself at him and offer to have his children. Any woman of taste would.

Currently sending his agent some travel brouchers for downtown Stonehaven.
