A short list of books I have on my shelves that I have not yet read.

  • David Halberstam, The Fifties
  • Richard Howard, Alone with America
  • Jeff Schmidt, Disciplined Minds
  • Helen Vendler, Soul Says
  • Thomas Pynchon, Mason & Dixon
  • Antonio Gramsci, The Prison Notebooks
  • Jesus de Nazaret, Las Palabras (mistakenly ordered in Spanish)
  • Fodor's New York City 1999
  • Deborah Solomon, Utopia Parkway:  the Life and Work of Joseph Cornell
  • Ruth Rendell, The Crocodile Bird
I should make other lists of the same ilk:  assorted CDs I never listen to; assorted clothes I haven't worn in years; files I will never again consult. Boxes of tea I'll never drink.  I do, however, hope to get around to reading almost all of the above books, including The Words of Jesus in Spanish.  If I ever learn Spanish.

  1. As always you manage to be funny and inspiring at the same time. Cool header, too.

Books by my bedside right now--
COLD COMFORT FARM by Stella Gibbons
SUZY, LED ZEPPELIN AND ME by Martin Millar
FOUR LETTERS OF LOVE by Niall Williams
THE MEANING OF NIGHT by Michael Cox

No titles in Spanish. But that's a nice thought!

  2. I started Mason and Dixon. When you get to page 400, let me know and I'll pick it up again!

  3. I'd run far away from the Prison Notebooks--you've already read critical theorists' cliffnote version of Gramscian hegemony. what more do you need?

I mean he didn't even intend all that for publishing, did he? It was on my shelf for a long time too. The book was on a list for a class I took but we never got around to it: big surprise there. Finally I gave my copy to someone though I'm unsure one could easily find an owner. You'd have to sell it as a gangsta/ druggie kind of prison tale.

  4. Sorry, I couldn't get to the lists, because that smokin' banner just made my day. And now I have to rest from all of the excitement. Seriously.

  5. How in the world do you come up with a short list? You must not have many shelves!
