In Which Technology Sticks a Shiv in my Heart.

Wednesday night my laptop crashed, and I haven't backed up my data. Not for a long time.

I won't bore you with all the important stuff that means I may have lost. It was a new-ish laptop. I never thought about it crashing.

Thoughtless, reckless, naive. Yes, all of these. I took my beautiful laptop for granted.

The tech guys all made concerned, then very concerned, noises when I told them what happened. There was a screen, a black screen, with these words: We're sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start properly. After that, there were six options for rebooting, all of which returned me to the same black screen. My computer itself made pathetic humming and ticking noises as it tried to reboot.

I feel like I have no hands.

  1. I am so so so sorry. There is nothing worse than this. Someone hit-and-run my car the other day and smashed up the front but it didn't really piss me off....the thought of my computer crashing sets me on edg though e. I am in a perpetual state of wanting to back stuff up and backing some stuff up and not backing stuff up. My travel theory is don't take anything you can't afford to lose...my computer theory should be back up everything you can't afford to lose. But I haven't backed up my movie files in a while. Stupid stupid. Thanks for the wakeup call...sorry it was at your expense. (I assume this wasn't your G4 (since its running windows (and since it crashed :( ))

  2. Yes the eternal sunshine of the spotless hard drive. I too, Mr. Computer Guy Central have lost a fair amount of materials over the years. I too am foolish and don't back up. I, however, have the COMPUTER SKILZZZZ to solve most problems with my own machines to get them to give me back my data. I am sorry that I could offer no help to you. The tech guys, however, should have had the materials to get at your data. As I warned you, t heir first answer is always "reimage!" That is NOT the first answer. It is the EASY answer; the answer that lets them sit in the back and play some RPG.

  3. suck, suck, suck. I have my computer set-up to automatically save stuff to my H drive at school (luckily they showed me how to do this when I got the new laptop). Problem is I rarely shut my machine down and it only automatically saves stuff when I shut it off and then turn it back on at campus. I too am probably playing with fire.
